Conquered by the Romans around 168 BC, Epirus became an autonomus province under the emperor Trajan. Epirus was an important region because of its geographical position, borderland since the ancient times, at the borders of the Roman Empire, it represented its “limes” (Latin word indicating both a border defence and streets for military use).
