The Cyrenaica was under the control of the Ptolemies, and it was separated from the rest of Egypt by Ptolemy VIII, who ceded this province to his son Tolomeo Apione. But Tolomeo Apione died without heirs, and so, as a legacy, the Cyrenaica become part of the Roman Empire in 96 BC, and it was reorganized in the province of Cyrenaica in 74 BC.
